Processing English with a Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes a natural language processing system implemented at Hewlett-Packard's Computer Research Center. The system's main components are: a Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar (GPSG); a top-down parser; a logic t ransducer that outputs a f i r s t o rde r logical representat ion; and a "disambiguator" that uses sortal information to convert "normal-form" f i r s t o rde r logical expressions into the query language for HIRE, a relational database hosted in the SPHERE system. We argue that theoretical developments in GPSG syntax and in Montague semantics have specific advantages to br ing to this domain of computational l inguist ics. The syntax and semantics of the system are tota l ly domain-independent, and thus, in pr inciple, h ighly portable. We discuss the prospects for extending domain-independence to the lexical semantics as well, and thus to the logical semantic representations.

The Swedish Core Language Engine
The paper describes a Swedish-language customization (S-CLE) of the SRI Core Language Engine, which has been developed at SICS from the original English-language version by replacing English-speciic modules with corresponding Swedish-language versions. The S-CLE is intended to be used as a building block in a broad range of applications, such as database query system, machine translation system...
متن کاملDo Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?
Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...
متن کاملA Phrase Structure Grammar Of The Arabic Language
A lot of work has been done in the field of natural language processing (NLP) for ARABIC. Few researchers have tried hard to apply on ARABIC the methods of computational linguistics, as for example, Definite Clause Grammar (DCG) [I] and Augmented Transition Networks (ATN) [2]. Because there is not a modern linguistic model for ARABIC grammar within the frame of computational linguistics, the re...

Treebanks is one of important and useful resource in Natural Language Processing tasks. Dependency and phrase structures are two famous kinds of treebanks. There have already made many efforts to convert dependency structure to phrase structure. In this paper we study an approach to convert dependency structure to phrase structure because of lack of a big phrase structure Treebank in Persian. A...
متن کاملA Formalism and Environment for the Development of a Large Grammar of English
Natural language grammars with large coverage are typically the result of many person-years of effort, working with clumsy formalisms and sub-optimal software support for grammar development. This paper describes our approach to the task of writing a substantial grammar, as part of a collaboration to produce a general purpose morphological and syntactic analyser for English. The grammatical for...
